Crews are itching to get back on set and producers are trying to figure out the best ways to keep a safe and efficient production. So we combed through publications and resources (see a full list at the bottom) to bring you the top recommendations to follow. While there’s no authority on the exact precautions you should take, here are some of the trends we found.

Pre Production

  1. Do as much pre-production remotely (scouting, casting, table reads) as possible.

  2. Purchase PPE, hand sanitizer, and soap for sanitizing stations on set.

  3. Testing: make sure all cast and crew have been tested before the first day of production with proof of negative results.

    • Unprotected actors and performers tested at least 3 times a week

    • Consider cast and crew rapid-test kits for day of production

  4. Try to keep a minimal crew and eliminate open calls: give everyone assigned times to arrive to allow for minimal crowding

  5. For larger shoots: Hire a Covid compliance officer dedicated to overseeing Covid safety strategies.

    • Keep a record of interactions for contact tracing, especially for actors who may not be able to wear PPE during scenes.

    • Set up a temperature check station to keep track of unprotected actors and crew.

    On Set

  6. Only essential cast and crew on the premises

    • visitors or personnel permitted

    • Crew should wear PPE at all times

  7. Maintain 6 feet apart as often as possible

    • Avoid any unnecessary contact

    • All crew members should be masked and gloved when working with talent

    • Face shields should be worn by makeup artists and hair stylists

    • Use disposable makeup kits and brushes

    • Dispose of paper scripts after use

    • Limit number of people in vehicles to 2 passengers at a time

  8. Managing Locations

    • Keep the shooting space cleaned and disinfected according to CDC instructions

    • Shoot outside or in well-ventilated areas

    • Catering should be distributed in a take-away fashion: eat meals outside, no buffets
